The public must seriously take the cautions of the Department of Health (DoH) concerning the fight against leptospirosis because of the continuous growth of these cases after the flash flood in Metro Manila and other nearby cities of Luzon this past few weeks brought about by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Leptospirosis is a disease obtained from the flood contaminated with urine of dogs, cats and rats, and enters the body through an open wound soaked in the flood water.
Parents and guardians must never let their children play in the flood water because they may not know that their children have a wound even if it’s small for it will still enter the body.
The public must be alert particularly the parents to the early warnings and symptoms of the said disease and immediately turn over to nearest health centers or go see a doctor in order to prevent and to give the needed aid for it.
It is hard not be cautious and may lead to more serious problems when in fact we have cures for this. We must always make ourselves clean and execute precautionary measures to fight this disease.
The symptoms of this disease are high fever, yellowing of the eyes and skin and having tea-colored urine.
In the latest report of DoH, we already have 398 cases of leptospirosis in different public and private hospitals, and is expected to increase because it usually lasts until one month incubation period before seeing the signs of this disease.
